  • You need maximum speed — VFFS routinely hits 50-60 BPM in production vs. 30-40 BPM typical for premade pouch
  • If your pouch is a simple back-seal bag, VFFS is the right choice. If you need a more complex pouch — zip-lock, quad-seal, or doypack (stand-up) bags — go with a premade pouch machine instead. These pouches usually sit on mid-to-upper retail shelves and are supplied pre-made by the pouch manufacturer.
Go premade pouch if:
  • You change products or bag sizes multiple times per shift — premade pouch changeover is 15 minutes; VFFS collar change is 45-90 minutes

Liquids (milk, juice, sauce, detergent, shampoo): Piston pumps handle most liquids. Viscous products (honey, peanut butter) or liquids with suspended particles (chunky salsa) need a different pump configuration. The VFFS Liquid variant is purpose-built for these.

The critical thing to check: your film's inner layer (the layer that faces inward and gets sealed) must be heat-sealable. If you're not sure, do a quick test — press a heated metal bar against the inner surface. If it melts and sticks to itself, it's sealable. If not, you have the wrong film. It's best to use low-temperature HDPE film — it achieves a perfect heat seal even at lower sealing temperatures.

The vertical (back) seal is failing but the horizontal seals are fine — what's different?
The vertical seal and horizontal seals use different mechanisms and have different failure modes. If only the vertical seal is failing:

Vertical seal wheel/bar temperature: The vertical seal runs continuously along the back of the film tube. Check its temperature independently — it may be set differently from the horizontal jaws. Verify with a surface thermometer that the actual temperature matches the HMI display.

Film overlap amount: The inner film layers must overlap 10-15mm at the back of the forming tube. Too little overlap = gaps in the seal. Too much = thick, inconsistent seal line. Adjust the film tracking to center the overlap.

Vertical seal bar contamination: Product dust or melted film residue on the vertical seal wheel or bar prevents clean contact with the film. Clean it thoroughly — this area is harder to see than the horizontal jaws and often gets neglected.

Vertical seal pressure: If the seal wheel isn't pressing firmly against the forming tube, the film layers don't bond. Check the pressure adjustment mechanism and verify the wheel isn't worn flat on one side.

Film orientation: If the sealable layer faces outward instead of inward at the overlap point, the vertical seal will never work. This happens when the film is threaded incorrectly. Verify the inner layer faces inward at the back seal overlap.
